What is Dinero.js?

Dinero.js lets you express monetary values in JavaScript.

You can perform mutations, conversions, comparisons, format them extensively, and overall make money manipulation in your application easier and safer.

Money is more complex than you think. It's way more than what you can stuff in a number type.

Right now, you might be representing money with the number type in your site or application. Something like this:

    platform: 'Nintendo Switch',
    price: 51.91,

You might also be calculating using arithmetic operators, and ending up with results like this:

const total = cart.reduce((acc, { price }) => acc + price, 0); // 121.89999999999999 😧

While certain programming languages like Java or C# safely support arbitrary precision decimals, JavaScript only lets you natively express decimals with double precision floats. The limitation is that it uses a binary system to represent decimal numbers, so you end up with inaccurate results when trying to math.

Using IEEE 754 floats to store monetary values is a bad idea. As you calculate more values, imperceptible precision errors lead to larger gaps. This inevitably ends up causing rounding issues.

When you see the following code, can you say how much it costs?

If you're in the United States, you might think it's $69.99. If you live in the European Union, you might have instinctively gone for €69.99. The bottom line is, there's no way to know. You can only guess.

The amount of a monetary value is always relative to its currency. There's no such thing as ten "money". It's ten dollars, ten euros, ten bitcoins, etc. To add up two amounts with different currencies, you need to convert them first. The same goes for comparisons: if you don't know whether the two amounts share the same currency, you can't know which one is lesser or greater. Amount and currency can't go without one another.

We tend to underestimate the complexity of how money works as a system. It's such an integral aspect of everyday life that we simplify its concepts to what we use and how we roughly think it works.

For example, how would you stagger the following purchase in two payments?

Maybe something like this:

const payment = purchase.price / count;
const payments = new Array(count).fill(null).map(() => payment);

Half of $369.99 is $184.995, but you can't split a penny. A straightforward solution might be to round to the nearest amount you can charge.

const payment = Math.round((purchase.price / count) * 100) / 100;

But now, both halves would round up to $185, and you'd charge a penny extra.

Basic operations like percentages or division can't cut it without adding or losing pennies. Instead of relying on simplified concepts, you need an abstraction that accurately models the nature of money.

An immutable library is safer and more predictable. Mutable operations and reference copies are a source of bugs. Immutability avoids them altogether.

Dinero.js lets you perform calculations without altering original instances. In the following Vue.js example, calling priceWithTax won't alter price. If the instance was mutable, it would.

Money is one small concern in your entire site or application; there's no reason for it to become a performance bottleneck. Dinero.js comes in pure, cleanly separated modules, so you can pull exactly what you need in your codebase.
